What is gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is caused by excess fat in a particular area of the chest (pseudo-gynaecomastia) or by an excessive development of breast tissue – or even a combination of both. There may also be the presence of excess skin in the chest area. In some cases, just one side of the chest may be affected and this is known as unilateral gynaecomastia. When both chest areas are affected, we call this bilateral gynaecomastia. The condition can occur due to hormones, genetics and some lifestyle choices such as alcohol or steroid abuse. At Netri Cosmetic in Chester, we don’t just and you will find nothing but a sympathetic ear from Mr Netri and the team of dedicated and empathic staff.

Gynaecomastia surgery is a permanent solution to this condition and Mr Netri is recognised as an expert in both male and female breast surgeries across the globe. There are several options available with this surgery and your individual treatment will be tailored to your unique concerns.

Your consultation with Mr Netri

Before any surgical treatment can commence here at Netri Cosmetic Surgery in Cheshire, we will conduct an initial consultation with Mr Netri. Our practice nurse will also attend, so that you feel comfortable and relaxed.

This meeting will last approximately 1 hour and will give you the opportunity to discuss why you are considering a gynaecomastia surgery, what you’re expecting before, during and after the procedure, any concerns or questions you have and what you expect by means of results.

Mr Netri will also speak to you about your family and your medical history. He will also need your permission to contact your GP to obtain your medical records for assessment. In some cases and as recommended by new guidelines in the UK for cosmetic Surgery, a psychological assessment may also be carried out.

Mr Netri will examine and measure your chest and take note of your chest size, shape, the position of your nipples and the skin quality in this area. After this examination has taken place, Mr Netri can then explain, in detail, the operation itself, any risks that are associated with the procedure and possible associated complications.

You will be offered a second consultation with Mr Netri, to talk through your surgical plan, in detail and to ask any additional questions that you might have thought of or forgotten during your first appointment.

At Netri Cosmetic Surgery, we have a minimum 14 day cooling off period. This allows you to think carefully about your operation and whether it is the right decision for you. We want to ensure that you have all the necessary information possible to make this decision and respect that this can take a little time. At any point during your decision making process, you can speak with Mr Netri or the team, if you have any further questions or concerns. Take your time to come to your decision and it will be the right one for you.

What happens during male breast reduction surgery?

This procedure takes between 1 to 2 hours and can be performed as a day case with a 1 to 2 week recovery (downtime) period before you can go back to work (depending on how physically demanding your job is).

We will use a general anaesthetic during this procedure so you will be unconscious throughout.

Depending on your consultation and physical assessment, Mr Netri will choose which of the following procedures to perform. A combination may also be decided upon.

A choice of procedures

If you have an excess of fat (pseudo-gynaecomastia), Mr Netri will use liposuction or Vaser liposuction. A small tube is inserted through a very small incision in your chest area. This tube is connected to a vacuum system which removes the excessive fat via suction. There are different techniques for this procedure and Mr Netri will recommend the best one to suit you, at your initial consultation.

In some cases, Mr Netri will remove excess gland or skin tissue. This is for those who have real gynaecomastia (an excess of breast tissue). Using his exemplary skills within this field of practice, he will make the incision, normally along the circumference of the bottom half of the areola. Because of the colour between the areola and the rest of the skin, the final scar is suitably disguised.

In some cases, where Mr Netri needs to remove an excessive amount of fat and tissue, causing loose skin, or if the chest area is already saggy and the areola are too big or pointing downwards, it is necessary to remove this skin. Usually the skin is surgically removed from the central part of the breast and the resulting scar will be around the areola, blending with the natural colour to disguise it.

In extreme cases, a breast reduction procedure, similar to those Mr Netri performs on women may be necessary. In these instances the resulting scars will be visible on the chest in an anchor-like shape.

Gynaecomastia surgery can be scheduled as day case surgery. Sometimes an overnight stay is necessary depending on your individual circumstance. However, this will be discussed at the time of your consultation.

Is there any aftercare or downtime?

Before leaving the hospital, following your gynaecomastia surgery, you will be given specific aftercare instructions, along with your medication, and when to follow-up with Mr Netri.

You will need to keep your dressings clean and dry for a week after surgery and wear a compressive garment for a month, during the day and at night.

You can drive after a week and go back to work between 1 and 2 weeks, depending on the physical nature of your job. You will also need to refrain from exercise and any heavy lifting for 4 weeks after your surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I suitable for gynaecomastia?

If you’re considering gynaecomastia surgery, use this initial checklist to see if you qualify for an initial consultation:

  • You are over 18
  • You are healthy – eat well and follow a regular exercise regime
  • You don’t smoke
  • You are unhappy with the size or appearance of your chest area and it is affecting your daily activities
  • You are in physical pain or discomfort because of your chest area
  • You are not significantly overweight
  • You do not currently use steroids, marijuana or drink alcohol excessively, and do not intend to use these in the future, as these substances can cause recurrence of gynaecomastia
  • Your chest is asymmetrical

Are there risks with male breast reduction surgery?

A male breast reduction is a surgical procedure and as with any operation, there are always risks, however unlikely. Mr Netri has performed thousands of gynaecomastia surgeries and this means that the chances of an unforeseen circumstance arising during the surgery is minimal to negligible.

During your consultation, Mr Netri will guide you through every aspect of the surgery and will explain all risks that could be associated with this procedure. You can then weigh up the risks and make an educated and informed decision about whether to go ahead with the surgery and start to live a more confident, fulfilled life.

At Netri Cosmetic Surgery, it is our duty to tell you all about the risks and any potential complications that could take place, as well as the benefits of this treatment.

Potential risks include:

  • Problems with the anaesthesia
  • Bleeding
  • Seroma (fluid accumulation)
  • Infection – post-surgery
  • Poor or uneven scarring
  • Persistent pain
  • Asymmetry
  • Loss of, or reduced sensation in the breasts or nipples
  • Partial or total loss of the areola and nipple
  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  • Need for revision of surgery.

What results can I expect?

The results from male breast reduction surgery are usually extremely good and immediately visible. The final results, however, can take up to 6 months and this is due to some post-surgical swelling. Any scarring as a result of this surgery can take over a year to fade and it’s important to remember that it will never disappear completely.

Results vary from man to man and depend on your unique anatomy, such as the formation of your chest, any asymmetry of the breasts, the size and position of the nipple-areola complex and the quality of your skin.

Your lifestyle, such as smoking, exercise and weight are also factors that can affect the results. When Mr Netri talks you through pictures during our consultation, these are used as a guide and your results may differ considerably to those of previous patients, any friends, family or colleagues that have had the surgery and those in the media, such as actors and models.

What is the cost of a male breast reduction surgery for gynaecomastia?

On average, prices start from £5,000 for straightforward male breast reduction surgery. However, prices vary, depending upon several key factors such as the hospital facility, whether you need an overnight stay and the techniques used in surgery.
