What is liposuction

Liposuction is the traditional method of inserting and cannula in to areas where fat is stored and removing them using a vacuum suction method. Liposuction is performed under a general anaesthetic (GA).

What happens during liposuction?

Both traditional liposuction and Vaser liposuction are procedures carried out under a general anaesthesia (GA). In most cases patients are able to leave on same day as their procedure, as long as they have someone to drive them home. Rarely an overnight stay is needed.
A period of downtime is required with liposuction and Vaser liposuction and this will be discussed at your pre-treatment consultation, so you can make the necessary arrangements for a smooth and effective recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I suitable for Vaser liposuction?

You may be suitable for liposuction or Vaser liposuction if you initially meet the following criteria:

  • You are over 18.
  • You are physically healthy, are not clinically-obese and your weight is fairly stable.
  • You have realistic expectations and are willing to make certain lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise plan, following your operation.
  • If you have fatty areas that are out of proportion with the rest of your body and which are resistant to healthy eating and regular exercise.
  • If you want a more defined look to certain areas of your body.
  • Your skin is quite elastic (liposuction removes fat but will not tighten skin).

If you meet the above criteria in most cases, you will be able to attend a no obligation consultation with Mr Netri, alongside our practice nurse, to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed about your chosen procedure.

This meeting will last around an hour and will give you the opportunity to chat through why you are considering liposuction or Vaser liposuction, to ask any questions and discuss with Mr Netri any concerns you have, the potential risks associated with each procedure and what results you can realistically expect.

Mr Netri will also need to check your family and your own medical history. He will also need permission by you, to contact your GP to obtain your medical records for his assessment. In some cases, and as recommended by new guidelines for cosmetic surgery in the UK, a psychological assessment may be required also.

Mr Netri will then examine you physically, take some measurements make notes of your physical anatomy, your size, asymmetry, skin quality, muscle tone and the presence of any scars, cellulite, stretch marks and skin pigmentations. Based on a physical examination it is then the time to discuss what your options are and what the results will be. Mr Netri will also explain in detail the operation, risks and possible associated complications.

You will always be offered a second consultation, following your initial meeting with Mr Netri, to talk through the procedure and your surgical plan, in detail and to ask any additional question that may have arisen, since your first consultation or anything you may have forgotten to ask at your initial meeting.

As we have a duty of care to all our patients here at Netri Cosmetic Surgery, we offer a minimum 14 day cooling off period, so that you can think carefully about whether a liposuction or Vaser liposuction procedure is the right decision for you, based on all the information we offer you. We also understand that you may need to time your procedure accordingly, to allow for child care if need be and time off work to recover. We want the decision you make to be the right one for you, so are on hand to answer any questions or queries at every stage.

Are there any risks with liposuction?

Liposuction and Vaser Liposuction are both surgical procedures and as with any surgery, there are always risks, however unlikely. Mr Netri is a highly-experienced specialist in this field, who has treated thousands of patients with superb outcomes. Therefore, the risks associated with these procedures are minimal to negligible. You will have all the risks and complications explained to you in your meetings with Mr Netri and will not be asked to sign your required consent form until you have read and understood all of them again, on the day of your procedure.

Potential risks can include:

  • Complications with anaesthesia.
  • Bruising.
  • Bleeding.
  • Seroma (fluid accumulation).
  • Persistent swelling.
  • Infection.
  • Asymmetry.
  • Skin irregularities.
  • An increase or worsening of cellulite.
  • Changes in sensitivity in treatment areas (can be permanent).
  • Poor wound healing.
  • Uneven or discoloured scarring.
  • Persistent pain.
  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
  • Damage to deeper structures such as the lungs.
  • The need for revision surgery.
  • Pigmentation of the skin around the treatment areas.
  • Thermal burn or heat injury in cases of Vaser treatments.

When will I see the results?

The results with liposuction and Vaser liposuction are usually extremely successful, permanent and can be immediately visible. Due to the post-surgical swelling that can be experienced, however, optimum results can take up to 6 months. Scars can take over a year to fade and won’t disappear completely.

Every patient is an individual, therefore, your results will vary significantly from someone you may know or pictures you see in the media or even before and after images you are shown at your consultation. Your own results can be affected by your unique anatomy such including your own proportions, body symmetry and skin quality. Your lifestyle also has an impact on results, such as whether you smoke, your diet and how much you exercise, as well as previous weight loss.

The results of liposuction and Vaser liposuction can be considered permanent, as the fat cells have been removed in their entirety. However, you will need to keep your weight stable to maintain these results. Your body shape can be affected by future weight gain, the natural ageing process, pregnancy, your genes and certain lifestyle factors.

It’s vital to understand that if, after liposuction or Vaser liposuction, you do put on weight, any excess fat can be stored in other body areas and there’s no way to predict where. What’s more, not every fat cell is removed from the treatment area, so you could still increase the size of remaining fat cells in this area.

How much does Vaser liposuction cost?

A straightforward liposuction procedure starts from approximately £4,000 but can vary depending upon the hospital facility, the number of areas required for treatment and if there’s a requirement for additional Vaser liposuction.
